Een oude vrijgezel heeft zijn hele leven vergeefs gezocht naar een goede vriend. Op een dag redt hij het leven van een Duitse herdershond, Tulip. Er ontstaat een diepe vriendschap tussen de twee en de eenzame man leeft helemaal op. Hij heeft het grootste plezier in haar gekke gewoontes, haar maniertjes en uitbundig enthousiasme. Deze droge humoristische animatiefilm is gebaseerd op het gelijknamige autobiografische boek uit 1956 van de Britse schrijver J.R. Ackerley. Hoewel ‘My Dog Tulip’ op het eerste gezicht op een traditionele tekenfilm lijkt, is er geen blaadje papier aan de film verspild. De hele prent werd namelijk op een Wacom-tablet getekend in TVPaint. Samen met zijn vrouw werkte Paul Fierlinger drie jaar aan de film. Hij maakte de meer dan 60.000 tekeningen, zij beschilderde zijn werk met digitale verf. De stemmen werden verzorgd door o.m. Isabella Rossellini en Lynn Redgrave.
