Ricky Gervais kennen we in de eerste plaats als de onuitstaanbare baas uit The Office en als derderangs 'acteur' in Extras. Voor hij doorbrak als tv-ster, trad hij vaak op in Londense theaters als stand-up comedian. Toen de grote hype rond The Office losbarstte hield hij zijn stand-up carrière even voor bekeken, maar sinds 2003 staat Gervais er terug. Animals is zijn eerste show in een nieuwe reeks. Een jaar later volgde Politics en op dit moment is hij bezig met het voorbereiden van zijn volgende show, Science.
In Animals toont Gervais die kant van het dierenrijk die de meeste natuurprogramma's jammer genoeg vergeten. Over die ergerlijke panda's die maar geen seks willen hebben, de homoseksuele neigingen van de zeekoe tot, op z'n zachtst gezegd, eigenzinnige analyses van de Bijbel.
